Erik Friedlander: Illuminations
Questa suite per solo violoncello è stata commissionata al violoncellista Erik Friedlander dal Jewish Museum di New York City nell'occasione di una mostra di libri antichi e manoscritti. L'ispirazione -che lo stesso Friedlander ha sottolineato essere legata alla pratica e alla pazienza, con una connotazione quasi rituale -ha prodotto una musica di grande intimità e delicatezza.

Il riferimento a Bach e a forme rinascimentali è dichiarato e percorso in tutta la sua forza evocativa, utilizzando a volte il pizzicato come modalità di riconnessione alle sonorità del liuto o della viola da gamba.
Ma va anche sottolineato come Friedlander faccia aperto riferimento a forme vocali come il canto e il madrigale, piuttosto che alle forme di danza tipiche delle suite di Bach.

Non è difficile leggere queste scelte come un'ulteriore forma di sincerità espressiva che attraversa materiali e suggestioni (non mancano infatti richiami alla musica ebraica) in un'accorata condivisione espressiva con l'ascoltatore.

Non è ovviamente la prima volta che il violoncellista si esprime in solitudine (ricordiamo Maldoror e la scintillante esecuzione di Volac, ottavo volume del Book of Angels zorniano), ma questo piccolo gioiello, nella sua apparente semplicità, ha il merito di andare al cuore del suono e del gesto stesso. Molto emozionante.
