Heinz Sauer with Michael Wollny & Joachim Kühn: IF (BLUE) THEN (BLUE)

È a tutt'oggi difficile regalare emozioni con la formula del duo tra sax e pianoforte, largamente esplorata dal mercato discografico del jazz. Un compito tanto più arduo e rischioso se si pensa di rivisitare alcuni classici del davisiano "Kind of Blue". E solo tre autentici fuoriclasse come Sauer, Kühn e Wollny potevano non lasciarsi ingabbiare dalle maglie melodico-armoniche degli standard proposti.

Il loro è un felicissimo incontro tra virtuosi del proprio strumento, oltre che tra due generazioni di musicisti tedeschi, per dar luogo ad un composito itinerario fatto anche di notevoli composizioni originali dove la sintonia d'intenti si abbina all'estro esecutivo. "All Blues" diviene un mitteleuropeo tema scuro malinconico, speziato di colori impressionistici in barba ai principi del blues e della pronuncia jazzistica. Una interpretazione-manifesto che potrebbe sintetizzare l'alta creatività di Sauer che si misura a turno con uno dei due pianisti coinvolti nel progetto.

Alla base vi è un dissacrante gioco di destrutturazione portato all'astrattismo per nascondere e liberarsi dal tema, che dopo arzigogolate impennate si intravede alla fine ("Lost Silhouettes") o all'inizio ("Blue in Green") rendendo l'ascolto impegnativo e ricco di sorprese.

C'è di tutto in questo disco: estro, divagazione, improvvisazione e - cosa più strana - in bozzetti quasi miniaturistici che non superano i quattro minuti. Vi si impone il dono della sintesi, sostenuta dal camaleontismo strumentale (legnoso, lirico, ossessivamente incalzante) sia eurocolto che d'improvvisazione.
