Pochi CD come questo trasmettono all'ascoltatore emozioni e swing di incommensurabile intensità. È questa la chiave di lettura di un magnifica prova pianistica, sviluppatasi nel segno di una olimpica leggerezza di tocco e fluidità di fraseggio. Una quintessenza della raffinatezza armonica e della tecnica sopraffina, non gridata solo sussurrata. Una lezione di jazz da parte del pianista statunitense, che incarna la figura del "musician's musician": artista di nicchia, ammirato per lo più da colleghi e ristrette schiere di palati sopraffini.

Un artista poco esposto mediaticamente, che, alla testa del suo trio, ci regala una squisita musicalità, autenticamente profonda. Ne discende una prova di grande eleganza, condotta con swing e souplesse per far apparire semplice e naturale ciò che facile in realtà non è. La sostanzia una maestria tecnica che rifugge da virtuosismi compiaciuti, per porsi al servizio dell'interplay e della comunicazione. Niente divismo e giochi gigioneschi, solo armonizzazioni sontuose per costruzioni melodiche accattivanti, illuminate da un contagioso feeling blues.

Come valore aggiunto, una vibrante espressività che sembra riassumere l'essenza del jazz: comunicativa, swing, capacità di trasmettere profonde emozioni, racchiusi nell'attimo irripetibile di aforistici giochi solistici. Un CD altamente istruttivo per capire perché George Cables abbia già lasciato una traccia indelebile nel jazz, attraverso memorabili incisioni live con Art Pepper e Dexter Gordon. La sua è una musica che va dritta al cuore perché racconta non solo note ma storie, interpretata con un tocco pianistico secco ed asciutto, sinuoso e flessibile.
