Hush Point: Hush Point III

Hush Point è un quartetto cooperativo operante a New York che ha pubblicato un primo disco, omonimo, nel 2013 e un secondo l'anno successivo (Blues and Reds Sunnyside). In questo terzo capitolo conferma l'identità stilistica di fondo, che colloca la tensione sperimentale in un quadro espressivo di derivazione West Coast. Da quel composito universo musicale e geografico, il quartetto riprende la dimensione (allora) più innovativa, scegliendo la formula pianoless che caratterizzò i gruppi di Gerry Mulligan e di Ornette Coleman (che, come sappiamo, iniziò in California) e la tensione sperimentale che animava i trii di Jimmy Giuffre.

Autore di quasi tutte le composizioni, il quasi settantenne John McNeil è il veterano dell'ensemble: è un pregnante trombettista che debuttò con Horace Silver ed ha alle spalle una ricca carriera in veste di leader e sideman in orchestre famose (Gerry Mulligan, Thad Jones Mel Lewis Remembered). I partner sono più giovani di venti o trent'anni (Kobrinsky) ma condividono con passione il progetto che rievoca affabili sonorità West Coast e privilegia soluzioni contrappuntistiche senza restane prigioniero.

I primi due brani sono deliziosamente retrò ("Wilbur" è un tributo a Wilbur Harden), grazie alla chiarezza melodica e al frizzante dinamismo ritmico ma in qualche brano successivo (nei tre temi di "Suite," soprattutto) troviamo soluzioni liberamente improvvisate. Avvincenti si rivelano la sonorità complessiva della formazione (originale la scelta di riprendere il C Melody Sax), il vivace interplay con la sezione ritmica e il contrasto tra l'incisiva tromba di McNeil e la fragranza sonora di Udden, che ricorda Warne Marsh e Jimmy Giuffre.

Una formazione che merita attenzione: ha trovato una ricca sintesi tra la sensibilità contemporanea e un momento particolarmente creativo del jazz anni cinquanta, spesso ingiustamente trascurato.
