Roots Magic: Hoodoo Blues
L'inizio è di quelli da far tremare i polsi, perché "The Hard Blues," originariamente registrato nel febbraio del 1972 durante le session di Dogon A.D. ma pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1975 come brano conclusivo di Coon Bid'ness, è totemico marchio di fabbrica di uno straordinario improvvisatore e compositore quale è stato Julius Hemphill. Ma Roots Magic, prima formazione italiana ad incidere per la prestigiosa Clean Feed, gira alla larga da interpretazioni più o meno fedeli, più o meno sovversive, più o meno eccentriche.

Piuttosto trasformano il brano in rito propiziatorio, in fonte di ispirazione per il viaggio attraverso il blues e le radici profonde della musica afroamericana. Così Blind Willie Johnson affianca Sun Ra, Charley Patton convive con John Carter, tradizione e ricerca abbracciate nello spirito del blues, del libero pensiero, della poesia.

Clarinetto e sassofono sono intense voci narranti, capaci di avvolgere con un suono scuro e ancestrale così come di liberare furiosa energia, raccontare storie di speranza e di rivolta o cullare nell'indolenza di dolci nenie. Mentre contrabbasso e batteria assicurano una pulsazione vitale senza pause, granitica nel fornire certezze ritmiche, elastica nell'assecondare e sollecitare opportuni cambi di registro.

È musica che ricorda lo scorrere del Mississippi, fiume culla del blues, a tratti irruente e nervosa a tratti placida e maestosa, capace di improvvisi moti di ribellione come di ipnotiche e ammalianti melodie, sempre comunque terreno fertile per le continue invenzioni presenti in Hoodoo Blues.
