Liberare le cose dai fronzoli permette di arrivare più facilmente alla loro essenza. Allo stesso modo, tra i molti parametri che si possono considerare per individuare il fulcro di un progetto musicale, alcuni si possono tralasciare, altri bastano da soli a descriverne lo spirito.

Max Frankl è un chitarrista, ma non è questo a colpirci quanto il fatto che sia soprattutto un compositore e un arrangiatore interessante. In Home, questo il titolo del suo ultimo disco, Frankl, che si avvale di altri cinque pregevoli jazzisti, sa costruire con molteplicità di sfumature idee tematiche che non si limitano a formulare rimandi alla scuola newyorkese, che da Dave Holland giunge fino a Greg Osby, passando da Steve Coleman, o a certune componenti di stampo nord europeo, e sa organizzare sapientemente i timbri a sua disposizione (dal clarinetto basso al trombone, dalle chitarre elettriche ed acustiche al fender rhodes), allo scopo di realizzare un contrappunto a blocchi strumentali ricco sia di verve ritmico-melodica sia di lenti e imperterrite atmosfere sospirate.

Ciò che di retorico c'è nel disco, soprattutto in certi momenti improvvisativi, viene ad essere compensato dalla scrittura, la quale non risulta mai sbrigativa o funzionale ai momenti solistici. È essa stessa perno formale e, per fortuna, vincolate delle improvvisazioni.

Pregevoli sanno essere i momenti solistici dei due fiatisti, del bravo trombonista Nils Wogram (autore di "Vertigo") e del sassofonista e clarinettista basso Domenic Landolf.

Con questo disco la carriera musicale di Max Frankl come compositore e band leader si arricchisce di un tassello importante. Home fotografa un interesse non superficiale di Frankl per la scrittura e per il sound, che sa essere molto intenso quando non cade nella tentazione prolungata del puro solismo accompagnato a tutti i costi.
