Vari aspetti distinguono quest'album rispetto alla produzione del mainstream contemporaneo. Per il suo esordio da leader il contrabbassista e compositore Lorin Cohen ha riunito un settetto dall'originale e accattivante tavolozza timbrica, ottenuta accostando i suoni del vibrafono (Joe Locke), dell'armonica (Yvonnick Prene) e dello steel pan (Victor Provost).
Autore di tutte le composizioni, Cohen mostra una fresca vena espressiva, presentando un jazz ritmicamente danzante e melodicamente cantabile, in cui troviamo influenze caraibiche, aromi francesi, turbolenze pianistiche tyneriane e luminosi squarci lirici.

I suoi partner contribuiscono al meglio alla riuscita del lavoro. Oltre quelli citati troviamo il dinamico pianista di Chicago Ryan Cohan, il talentuoso batterista Donald Edwards (già ascoltato con Orrin Evans, Conrad Herwig, Tom Harrell e la Mingus Big Band) e l'esplosivo percussionista Samuel Torres. Consueto partner del pianista Monty Alexander e dei vibrafonisti Stefon Harris e Joe Locke, Lorin Cohen ha intitolato quest'album Home, per un omaggio ai tre luoghi in cui si sente a casa: la metropoli dov'è nato e cresciuto (Chicago), quella dov'è maturato (New York City) e le isole che ama (i Caraibi).

Sin dal brano d'apertura la musica avvolge l'ascoltatore con la sua particolare fragranza: dopo una breve introduzione collettiva, il tema è esposto all'unisono dal contrabbasso e dal vibrafono, lasciando spazio ai solisti in variopinti percorsi melodico-ritmici che richiamano la bellezza del tema base.
La specificità timbrica della formazione emerge con pienezza nel brano successivo, "Always in My Heart," con l'ingresso di Yvonnick Prene all'armonica che introduce e sviluppa la linea melodica, lasciando spazio agli interventi dei colleghi. La propensione ritmica e gli aromi caraibici dell'album sono particolarmente evidenti in "A Brighter Day" e "Saudade," mentre un serrato clima straight-ahead emerge in "The Hero's Journey." Il tutto senza sacrificare la cantabilità dei brani, che contribuiscono all'attrattiva e alla fresca originalità dell'opera.
