Guapo: History of the Visitation
Siamo al nono album di questa eclettica formazione britannica, il secondo su etichetta Cuneiform, che si rifà a scuole e generi che rimandano non solo ad esperienze ben precise della musica rock progressiva europea, dai King Crimson di Lark's Tongues in Aspic ai Magma di Köhntarkösz, ma a cui piace sconfinare piacevolmente in territori paralleli come il noise, Terry Riley, Sun Ra e il jazz di John Coltrane. A dirla proprio tutta con History of the Visitation i Guapo (oggi un quartetto con l'ingresso del tastierista Emmett Elvin) si spingono ancora di più in territorio Zeuhl, che in kobaiano, la lingua inventata dal fondatore dei Magma Christian Vander, sta per "celestiale," entrando di diritto nella folta schiera dei discepoli dell'ordine sonoro vanderiano.

Una musica, dunque, vibrante e solenne allo stesso tempo che a ogni passaggio rivela mondi sconosciuti e misteriosi in cui il cielo è quasi sempre in tempesta carico di fulmini e di energia pulsante. Un paesaggio visionario ben rappresentato dalla suite in cinque movimenti "The Pilman Radiant," oltre 26 minuti di durata e fulcro di tutto l'album: qui l'ascoltatore nei panni di un novello Arzach, il solitario guerriero taciturno inventato da Moebius che si sposta a cavallo di un pterodattilo meccanico, ha la possibilità di prendere contatto con creature soniche fantastiche. Un vero e proprio trip post atomico che consacra History of the Visitation tra i migliori lavori della formazione, almeno al pari dell'ottimo Five Suns uscito nel 2004.

Accompagna il CD un DVD che contiene le riprese di concerti europei ed americani tenuti dai Guapo negli anni 2006 e 2007: si tratta dell'unica testimonianza video della band disponibile sul mercato. Qui la line up è differente da quella del CD: insieme a David J. Smith, batterista e fondatore del gruppo, ci sono James Sedwards al basso, Kavus Torabi alla chitarra e la "novità" Daniel O'Sullivan alle tastiere (quest'ultimo sostituito in History of the Visitation da Emmett Elvin). Un documento video affascinante, dark e apocalittico... proprio come i Guapo.
