Philip Catherine: Guitars Two
Dopo oltre vent’anni il chitarrista belga Philip Catherine, nato a Londra nel 1942, torna alla formula del disco in perfetta solitudine. Nel 1975 l’album solo che realizzò per la Atlantic era intitolato Guitars e quindi in questo caso, a rimarcare una sorta di continuità con quel bel progetto, si è deciso semplicemente di aggiungere il suffisso ‘Two’ a quel titolo già sintetico.

In realtà, Catherine non è mai solo in questi tredici brani. Infatti con la tecnica della sovraincisione si trova sempre a colloquiare con se stesso e con le sue chitarre elettriche ed acustiche. Lo fa con grande senso della misura e con gusto. La musica è sempre ben calibrata e non rischia mai di diventare un monologo. Spesso l’atmosfera si fa sognante e una leggera brezza sembra muovere delicatamente il fondale. C’è sempre un senso evidente del racconto, della compartecipazione delle emozioni.

Anche tecnicamente l’album risulta essere ben riuscito e certamente la grande maestria del chitarrista nell’utilizzo sempre misurato degli effetti è una componente importante che contribuisce ad ottenere questo ottimo risultato. Qua e là emergono delicate influenze gitane e certamente l’ombra lontana di Django Reinhardt ha una sua ragione di continuare ad essere presente al fianco di Catherine. La ballata di John Lewis “Skating in Central Park” sembra essere un chiaro omaggio alla bellissima versione che ne avevano dato Bill Evans e Jim Hall nel loro celebratissimo album Undercurrent del 1962.

Questo brano diventa una possibile chiave di lettura timbrica e strutturale di questo bel lavoro. Infatti la delicatezza degli intrecci delle due o più chitarre di Philip Catherine richiama lo stesso tipo di filigrana preziosa che i migliori duetti pianoforte-chitarra elettrica hanno saputo evocare nel corso della lunga storia della musica jazz. Un punto di confronto stimolante che porta ad un risultato artistico di ottimo livello.
