Mulgrew Miller è scomparso da pochi giorni (il 29 maggio 2013) e con lui se ne va un vero gigante della tastiera, il cui contributo all'evoluzione del linguaggio jazz al pianoforte gli garantisce un posto di rilievo nella storia del suo strumento e della musica che ha sempre interpretato ai massimi livelli. La sua arte si coglie nel modo più completo ascoltandolo in trio nei due volumi Live at the Kennedy Center (Max Jazz) o nei dischi realizzati in solitudine, come il prezioso Solo (Space Time). La sua carriera prese avvio al fianco dell'esigentissima Betty Carter, per proseguire con Woody Shaw, Art Blakey e tanti altri. In Miller si fondevano l'impatto di McCoy Tyner, la fantasia di Art Tatum, l'eleganza di Hank Jones.

Grew's Time è il frutto dell'incontro con una longeva big band danese, attiva dal 1975 e guidata dal direttore e arrangiatore Jens Klüver. Un'orchestra di indubbia qualità, l'unica a ricevere nel suo paese un finanziamento pubblico e che ha saputo attirare negli anni il meglio dei jazzisti americani di passaggio in Europa, fra i quali Thad Jones, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano e Clark Terry. Klüver ha passato il testimone a Lars Moller giusto dopo questo concerto dedicato a Miller e realizzato nel 2012. Ora la big band non porta più il suo nome, si chiama Aarhus Jazz Orchestra e rimane una delle migliori formazioni attive in Europa.

Klüver selezionò per l'occasione sei composizioni di Miller, assegnando gli arrangiamenti a tre diversi autori (due americani, uno danese) in modo da celebrare la musica del pianista secondo ottiche diverse, ma non contrastanti. In tutti i casi la scrittura è ricca, esperta, avvincente, merito senza dubbio del materiale di partenza, nel quale Miller aveva riversato emozione, ottimo gusto melodico, fantasia ritmica e profondo pensiero armonico. La cornice orchestrale lo asseconda nell'esposizione dei temi e prepara lo spazio per assolo magistrali.

Grew's Tune non conosce cali di tensione, è un lavoro coinvolgente, che rivela nuove sfaccettature a ogni ascolto e alimenta il rimpianto per una scomparsa davvero prematura.
