Harris Eisenstadt si è inserito da tempo in quel significativo drappello di batteristi-compositori in grado di dire una parola nuova nel jazz acustico di oggi. Lo fa in diversi contesti e, accanto a gruppi quali Canada Day e September Trio, svetta ora questo Golden State, originalissimo organico che affianca alle percussioni del leader il fagotto di Sara Schoenbeck, il contrabbasso di Mark Dresser e in questa occasione il clarinetto di Michael Moore che rimpiazza la flautista Nicole Mitchell.

I brani sono tratti da un concerto tenuto al festival di Vancouver del 2014 e ragionano intorno ad un possibile jazz da camera contemporaneo, riuscendo a comunicare una freschezza spontanea, un'immediatezza di fruizione non comuni per una musica comunque pensata e arrangiata con dovizia di intelletto.

Si coglie la centralità del contrabbasso di Dresser, attorno alla cui ancora brulicano i dialoghi all'unisono ma più spesso contrappuntati di clarinetto e fagotto, in un'atmosfera diafana molto affascinante. Eisenstadt è discreto ma perfetto nei sostegni e nelle punteggiature, attento a non invadere questo campo così delicato e dagli equilibri precari. Si sente una capacità di direzione cordiale, serena, non per questo pacificata. La musica infatti vibra di sottili increspature, di esplosioni trattenute, scivolando felpata tra sequenze dal beat esplicito (specie i primi due brani) ed altre invece galleggianti in un'indeterminazione vaporosa.

L'apporto di Moore è vivacissimo, tanto che in certi episodi sembra di essere dentro a delicatezze alla Icp Orchestra, così come il ruminare scabro di Schoenbeck appare il suo naturale contraltare.

Un disco prezioso, che arricchisce il già brillante status di Harris Eisenstadt.
