Ramsey Lewis: Goin' Latin
Classe 1935, Ramsey Lewis è uno dei musicisti che ha traghettato il jazz verso i lidi easy listening. A cui può essere comodamente attribuito l'appellativo lounge. Che non sfigurerebbe in una colonna sonora di un film spy story o accanto a Dusty Springfield o Pete Sellers.

Che ha popolarizzato le esoticità alla Duke Ellington. Che non starebbe male in un catalogo Exotica o di extravaganza. Che vestirebbe un look musicale radical chic simil Burt Bacharach, Lalo Schifrin, Henry Mancini, John Barry e compagnia bella.

Quando decise di incidere questo disco - siamo nel 1967, cioè la bellezza di 41 anni fa - aveva da poco consegnato alle hit americane il fortunato Wade in the Water.

E con un trio (assieme la pianista anche Cleveland Eaton, basso, e soprattutto un giovanissimo Maurice White - futuro leader degli Earth Wind & Fire - alla batteria) incise quest'ulteriore saggio di musica da intrattenimento che tanto ha fatto la fortuna degli attuali discendenti del nu-jazz.

Quindi, nonostante quasi mezzo secolo, le sonorità di Goin'Latin (ristampato per la serie Originals della Verve) arrangiate da Richard Evans con interventi di percussioni, ottoni e archi, sembrano quanto mai attuali.

I passaggi blueseggianti di "Hey Mrs. Jones," quelli ammalianti di "Summer Samba," "Down by the Riverside" o le sciccherie sentimentalistiche da cocktail party (l'arrangiamento del tema di Lara del dotto Zivago, ma anche "Free Again") stanno lì come se fossero immobili nel tempo.

La loro grazia accomodante, la liricità e la spavalderia melodica e conviviale: il disco sembra un'istantanea che mantiene la sua dignitosa contemporaneità.
