Benchè il suo nome sia associato all’avanguardia statunitense, Gerald Cleaver ha realizzato il disco più bello di mainstream jazz degli ultimi anni. Già collaboratore di Henry Threadgill, Roscoe Mitchell e Joe Morris, il batterista di Detroit conferma con il suo secondo CD per la Fresh Sound le eccellenti doti di strumentista e compositore.

Rispetto alle forme più avventurose del disco d’esordio del 2001 Adjust, il suo sestetto si muove su territori meno impervi ma ugualmente affascinanti, in cui la formula stilistica d’adozione viene arricchita dalle forme estese dei brani originali, tutti firmati dal leader.

La rivitalizzano forme ariosamente fluide, in cui si va ad innestare una felice vena nell’arrangiare un seducente incastro a più voci, dove giganteggiano il clarinetto basso di Andrew Bishop e la raffinata tromba di Jeremy Pelt. Il tutto magnificamente dettato e sostenuto da un vortice percussivo ora incalzante e poliritmico, ora brioso, fluido e swingante

Il leader è insomma un vero maestro del drumming contemporaneo, destinato a fare grandi cose dul triplice piano della composizione, arrangiamento e della pratica jazzistica. Capita davvero di rado ascoltare con vera goduria un CD di altissimo livello come quello del Nostro, per il quale progettualità e tecnica costituiscono un binomio inscindibile.

Dedicato alla sua città natale, Detroit, centro di confluenza statunitense per eccellenza di R&B e jazz, il disco si impone per l’originalità di certi impasti timbrici rari nel mainstream, oltre che per l’estrema volubilità dell’avvincente materiale tematico.

Un percorso già di per sé affascinante, che viene sapientemente impreziosito dai voli fiatistici della splendida front line (Allen-Bishop-Pelt), magnificamente assecondata dai repentini cambi di direzione della ritmica (Walzer-Lightcap-Cleaver). Tutto da assaporare il duetto tra il clarinetto basso e il piano in “Grateful”: meraviglioso bozzetto di poesia pura, concentrata in appena due minuti.

Ottima anche la veste grafica, per via di un superbo apparato iconografico, che integra con il click della macchina fotografica quanto esposto in musica.
