Squadra che vince non si cambia, o quasi. Miles Okazaki - chitarrista americano, classe '74, proveniente da una famiglia dedita alle arti visive - dopo il convincente debutto da leader intitolato Mirror dà alle stampe Generations, registrato in un'unica take e ideale prosecuzione del suo discorso compositivo che unisce tecnica, fantasia e intraprendenza.

Via gli elementi elettronici e stesso ensemble del lavoro precedente: retroguardia ritmica di livello assoluto composta da Jon Flaugher e Dan Weiss, splendido tridente offensivo con gli altoisti Miguel Zenón, David Binney e Christof Knoche, con l'aggiunta decisiva di Jen Shyu; in quanto sono proprio le sue linee a dare personalità ai nove brani proposti e restituire fascino a un impianto sonoro altrimenti privo della necessaria lucentezza.

Okazaki ama starsene sullo sfondo (per dirla tutta, non sembra di ascoltare un disco pensato da un chitarrista elettrico) e lascia spazio alle rincorse dei fiati, ma quando diventa figura primaria marca il segno in almeno un paio di occasioni ("Sun" e "Ghosts"), grazie a una forza espressiva micidiale che mira dritto al cuore dell'ascoltatore. Fanno centro pieno anche i segmenti dove la band fa gioco d'insieme, come in "Waves," e viene spontaneo sottolineare la conclusiva "Moon," se non altro perchè contiene un solo firmato da Binney di lancinante bellezza.

"Generations" si sviluppa con disinvoltura estrema ed è caratterizzato da una costante dose di imprevedibilità, fattore che per Okazaki sembra rappresentare, nello stesso istante, la base su cui costruire, l'indizio su cui indagare e il suggerimento da dare a chi gli suona intorno.
