Fresh Cut Orchestra: From the Vine

La Fresh Cut Orchestra è un ensemble di dieci giovani musicisti di stanza a Filadelfia guidato dal trombettista Josh Lawrence (Erykah Badu, Orrin Evans), dal bassista Jason Fraticelli (Mark Guiliana) e dal batterista Anwar Marshall (Kurt Rosenwinkel, Dave Douglas). L'anomalia dei tre leader si riflette in una musica dalle molte sfaccettature come ben evidenziato da "The Mother's Suite," composizione suddivisa in sette brani, composta dopo la tragica scomparsa della suocera di Fraticelli.

La suite suscita emozioni, provoca sentimenti, celebra la vita anche nei momenti più tragici. Si passa dalle melodie silvestri in versione ambient di "Birth of a Child, Birt of a Mom" ai ritmi latineggianti di "Mother's Love," dall'intenso, commovente solo di contrabbasso in "Elegy for a Mom" (con Charlie Haden a occhieggiare dall'alto), all'energia rock concentrata nei due frenetici minuti di "Migration of the Spirit," per chiudere con la festosa atmosfera di "Reawakening," bel lavoro del pianista Brian Marsella, sia in fase solistica che di accompagnamento alle evoluzioni dei fiati.

Il disco si chiude con "Uptown Romance" blues firmato da Lawrence che profuma di eleganti sale da ballo, chiari di luna e aromi esotici, e con "Sanguine," brano uscito dalla penna di Marshall, tra fusion, eleganti armonizzazioni, acid-jazz sofisticato. From the Vine risulta quindi disco ben architettato, con arrangiamenti freschi e swinganti, senza impennate clamorose ma godibile dall'inizio alla fine.
