Walking Distance feat. Jason Moran: Freebird
Un tuffo nel passato e uno al cuore. Sono le prime battute di "William" e lo spirito di Charlie Parker prende forme e colori così vividi da lasciar stordito l'ascoltatore. E' il brano iniziale di Freebird e se per una volta i nomi rimandano ad un qualche significato mai titolo di album fu più azzeccato.

Perché dopo questa botta iniziale, sostanzialmente filologica nella forma e nell'esecuzione, la figura di Bird diventa meno ingombrante, appare qua e là, si trasforma in riferimento concettuale per le libere scorribande dei protagonisti di questa splendida incisione.

Che, oltre alla sezione ritmica, presenta un sax tenore ed un sax contralto, impegnati in dialoghi ora concitati ora sorprendentemente eterei, e in metà dei brani il pianoforte di Jason Moran, molto più che un ospite di lusso. I suoi interventi lanciano la musica verso nuove direzioni, creano contrasti, alimentano groove, seminano depistaggi.

Ma tutti i brani sono ricchi di sorprese, le linee melodiche vengono continuamente rielaborate, frantumate o espanse, le esplorazioni timbriche sono una costante—l'enigmatico "Simple Ghilnooorty," con doppio mellotron, ne è la testimonianza più clamorosa.

Anche "Quasar Halo," non scherza in quanto ad eccentricità rispetto al fil rouge basato sui tempi medio veloci che attraversa Freebird. Sono sette minuti abbondanti dal vago sapore folk/pastorale in cui sembra non succedere nulla ma che gradualmente aprono le porte di un mondo onirico difficile da dimenticare.
