Soffi e colpi d'ancia che rompono il silenzio con circospezione, vibrazioni di corde elettriche che rimandano a scenari post-atomici, frullii di metallo tesi come nervi scoperti, la sensazione che qualcosa di apocalittico debba succedere da un momento all'altro. Ed infatti eccolo - il lettore segna due minuti e cinquantadue secondi - il portentoso riff di "Black Dog" esposto da sax tenore e da sax baritono, abbattersi come un tornado sull'ascoltatore. È uno shock anafilattico che provoca un piacere quasi insostenibile salvo, appena dopo, stemperarsi in una straniante dimensione onirica.

Poi ancora Led Zeppelin, una "Out in the Tiles" presa ad un tempo impossibile con swing da vendere e toni da fanfara in festa, Black Sabbath, con "Iron Man" scura, tenebrosa, trasformata dal sax tenore di Liudas Mockunas in ballad dalle insospettabili qualità melodiche e dalle improvvise deflagrazioni free. I Rolling Stones di "Paint It Black" vengono circondati da un alone di mistero, con il tema del brano che si insinua velenoso come un serpente prima di rivelare la sua vena orientaleggiante.

"Johnsburg, Illinois" di Tom Waits è dolente e notturna, un dialogo tra baritono e contrabbasso che sa di locali fumosi, bourbon a volontà, lo sguardo disilluso di chi conosce le miserie del mondo. Mentre l'andamento innodico di "Seven Nation Army" esplode in una grintosa versione tracciata dai fiati solo al termine di una lunga introduzione impalpabile, sospesa tra sogno e realtà.

"Interpretating Six Standards From the History Book of Rock 'n' Roll" recita la front page del CD, progetto nato nel 2011 durante un artist-in residence alla Jazzhouse di Copenhagen del batterista Stefan Pasborg. Tra le qualità dell'incisione ci piace sottolineare lo spirito liberoe le brillanti idee oltre che la freschezza interpretativa con la quale questo gruppo di giovani musicisti si avventura nel mondo un poco stantio e inflazionato dei tributi.
