Nome decisamente poco familiare dalle nostre parti quello del pianista di Philadelphia Ron Stabinsky.
Componente da un po' di tempo degli irriverenti Mostly Other People Do the Killing (con i quali lo abbiamo ascoltato dal vivo a Saalfelden nel 2015, una prestazione davvero pazzesca), il musicista ha al suo attivo anche collaborazioni con Peter Evans, David Liebman e nell'ambito della musica classica.

Il suo debutto solista, per la Hot Cup del suo leader nei MOPTDK, Moppa Elliott, è un interessante raccolta di otto improvvisazioni nelle quali la formidabile tecnica di Stabinsky è a servizio di un flusso di coscienza sempre governato con grande spontaneità.
Allievo di Bill Dixon, Stabinsky affida al gesto solista una forza multidirezionale, in cui vari parametri -un frammento melodico o ritmico, zone di astrazione, strutture accordali, iterazioni, etc. -generano un flusso sempre sorprendente.

Convivono felicemente nelle otto tracce del disco il lirismo della melodia e momenti più bruschi, in cui la fisicità del pianoforte, sebbene non portata agli estremi, è esplorata con contagiosa pervicacia. Un disco davvero intrigante, con cui si acquisisce familiarità ascolto dopo ascolto e che ci spinge a non perdere d'occhio questo splendido musicista.
