Roni Ben-Hur: Fortuna

Il chitarrista israeliano Roni Ben-Hur vive a New York da oltre 25 anni, ma il sangue tunisino e spagnolo presente nelle sue radici familiari rimane ben presente e tinge con piacevoli influenze il suo jazz moderno adottato come linguaggio di base, in puro stile mainstream. Lo accompagnano in questo album il pianista Ronnie Mathhews (purtroppo deceduto per un tumore, poco tempo dopo aver completato le registrazioni di questo album), il bassita Rufus Reid, il batterista Lewis Nash e il percussionista Steve Kroon.

Il repertorio mischia standard molto ben arrangiati, canzoni brasiliane e un brano prelevato dal mondo della musica classica tinto di suggestioni etniche ("Granada") senza dimenticare due interessanti composizioni originali scritte dallo stesso chitarrista. Il clima è elegante e brioso, con qualche divagazione malinconica e nostalgica che aggiunge passionalità e calore, senza generare compiacimento.

Le timbriche sono calde e morbide, con la chitarra di Ben-Hur e il basso di Rufus Reid decisamente apparentati nella parte centrale della tavolozza timbrica complessiva. Il fraseggio non prevede soluzioni angolari, procede linearmente senza mai forzare troppo il ritmo e l'armonia. Questa musica regala sensazioni di intimità e di condivisione, ed è sempre pronta a intrecciarsi con il sapore di un buon brandy sorseggiato di fronte ad un camino, alternando il mordente del liquido ambrato con la degustazione di una scatola di datteri dolci e profumati.
