Kevin Hays Trio: For Heaven's Sake

Al suo primo disco per la nuova etichetta palermitana Jazz Eyes, la cui comparsa sulla scena salutiamo con favore, il trentottenne pianista statunitense Kevin Hays, già collaboratore di Sonny Rollins e John Scofield, presenta un classico lavoro per trio piano-contrabbasso-batteria, tutto incentrato su rielaborazioni di standard. L'inevitabile confronto con lo Standard Trio di Keith Jarrett è in questo caso più appropriato che in altri, sia per il modo in cui la formazione si spartisce spazi e ruoli, sia per le scelte armoniche e improvvisative del pianista, sia, infine, per il tocco sulla tastiera.

Si badi bene, questo non vuol affatto dire che ci troviamo di fronte ad uno dei purtroppo frequenti cloni slavati di Jarrett, perché Hays evita intelligentemente di riprenderne gli aspetti più caratteristici e personali, che nelle mani di un altro finirebbero inevitabilmente per apparire grotteschi. Viceversa, sviluppa una elaborazione melodica che, ben supportata da un vibrante ma misurato dinamismo e dai due compagni - il contrabbassista Doug Weiss e soprattutto il sensibile e animatissimo battersita Bill Stewart - conferisce alle esecuzioni una ben marcata e propria personalità.

Se ne colgono bene i frutti nella trasversale “Beatrice” di Sam Rivers e nella vivace traccia che titola il CD, mentre se in “If Ever I Would Leave You” si possono ascoltare numerose affinità con Jarrett, in “If Could Happen To You” - cavallo di battaglia proprio dello Standard Trio - si possono apprezzare anche le marcate differenze di sensibilità che separano due pianisti.

Nel complesso un lavoro di buon spessore, autorevole biglietto da visita per la Jazz Eyes.
