Il connubio con la tradizione folklorica è stata una delle costanti del jazz in Polonia. Dal loro enorme patrimonio di canti e danze popolari hanno tratto ispirazione -direttamente o indirettamente-importanti jazzmen di quel Paese: si va dall'opera pionieristica di Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski e di Zygmunt Wichary a quella di Zbigniew Namyslowski, Michal Urbaniak, Andrzej Trzaskowski e altri.
Nell'ultimo decennio l'impegno del sassofonista Irek Wojtczak in quest'ambito è stato assiduo e l'ha portato alla formazione dell'ensemble Bees' Knees and Folk Five e all'incisione del disco Direct Memory Access, dedicato espressamente al tema.

Per la realizzazione di questo Folk Five, Wojtczak ha coinvolto quattro eminenti partner del post-free statunitense, ovvero il Fonda-Stevens Group, arrangiando otto danze tradizionali polacche in una prospettiva d'avanguardia storica. L'approccio al materiale è vario e fantasioso. In alcuni brani le linee melodiche tradizionali sono esposte in apertura dal collettivo e da queste si sviluppano gli interventi solisti. In altri momenti la relazione col tema originale è solo accennata e il gruppo trova ispirazione nella struttura dei brani stessi.
Ma accade anche che il lirismo delle melodie venga esaltato in radiose versioni, anche cameristiche (come nel piano solo di Michael Jefry Stevens in "Pod Gazem"). Brani tumultuosi, dalla forte espressività ("Ogrywka," " Leczycki"), si alternano a liriche ballate ("Cztery Mile Za Warszawa," caratterizzato dal magistrale intervento di Herb Robertson) che ricordano le nostalgiche suggestioni di alcuni temi di Komeda.
Una di queste, la mazurka "Oj, Stary Jo Se, Stary" viene trasfigurata in un'appassionata quanto astratta versione sviluppata dal duo sax tenore/percussioni.

Il percorso musicale è ricco e avvincente. Il veemente disegno ritmico di Joe Fonda e Harvey Sorgen è esemplare e Wojtczak ha modo di evidenziare anche le ottime doti strumentali, al sax tenore, soprano e clarinetto basso.
