Ecco un disco che sembra riflettere l'iconografia (e i luoghi comuni) del jazz, musica da locali fumosi, con luci tenue e immagini in bianco e nero, tanto bene immortalata in quel capolavoro cinematografico che è Round Midnight.

Il protagonista di Eye to Eye è il sax tenore di Mark Wyand, giovane musicista inglese trapiantato in Germania. A scoprirlo è stato Till Brönner (presente solo in quattro brani), trombettista tedesco che incide per la Verve. Wyand sa incontrare i gusti del pubblico con ballad di tipo moderno, seguendo un po' le tracce di Mark Turner (mentre una volta si seguivano Ben Webster o Lester Young). La ritmica segue benissimo il concetto di morbidezza esposto dal leader riuscendo, cosa non sempre semplice nel genere scelto, ad evitare monotonia e stucchevolezza. Il gruppo riesce a scavare all'interno delle ballads, traendone suoni adatti all'inverno ed ai fiocchi di neve che si scorgono dalle finestre.

Un disco accattivante, mirato al pubblico giovane - viste le foto del booklet - fatto però con cura, di un musicista che porta attenzione al modo in cui si presenta anche dal punto di vista dell'immagine.
