Un incisione come Extra Mile si avvicina molto all'estetica di label indipendenti come la Fresh Sound New Talent (non a caso John O'Gallagher e Mark Ferber sono abituali frequentatori di quegli studi di registrazione). Un estetica che da spazio a musicisti giovani, emergenti, o sottovalutati, gli permette di esprimersi in assoluta libertà in contesti congeniali, anche molto diversi tra di loro, e con differenti compagni di viaggio. Così che la personalità artistica e umana del musicista ne possa uscire a 360° gradi, colta in tutte le proprie sfaccettature.

Se vi è un limite in Extra Mile, dell'eccellente Pete McCann, chitarrista che vanta partecipazioni di lusso nei Lee Konitz Nonet, Dan Willis Sextet, Maria Schneider Orchestra tra gli altri, è però quello di riversare tutte le proprie anime artistiche in una sola incisione, quasi a voler dimostrare la propria abilità nel passare da uno stile chitarristico all'altro (neo-bop, jazz-rock, fusion, avanguardia, straight ahead), da un mood compositivo all'altro.

Ne emerge uno zibaldone sonoro tutt'altro che disprezzabile, ma inevitabilmente sfilacciato, con convivenze a volte forzate, e un po' troppo abbondante e carico di materiale, ingolfato si direbbe in termini automobilistici. Anche se Extra Mile è comunque ricco i episodi interessanti soprattutto quando McCann abbandona le atmosfere sofisticate e le sonorità ovattate della sei corde per addentrarsi nella frenesia, nelle nevrosi, nelle ibridazioni, e nei fermenti che popolano la vita quotidiana delle città del mondo.
