Pur non aggiungendo nulla rispetto a quanto si è già ampiamente ascoltato di Dexter Gordon, Espace Cardin 1977 è un CD da tenere in considerazione per diverse ragioni. Ritroviamo l'allora cinquantacinquenne sassofonista ad un nuovo punto di svolta della sua già fulgida trentennale carriera, appena rilanciata dal contratto discografico con la Sony. Questo set parigino è uno degli ultimi suoi concerti europei antecedenti il ritorno negli Stati Uniti e ne documenta il felice connubio con Al Haig, altro artista dal tormentato percorso umano e dalla straordinaria statura artistica. Affidandosi ad una formula ampiamente sperimentata tra bop e a hard bop, il quartetto regala all'ascoltatore un'ora di grande jazz, che trascende modelli e stili.

Svetta, come sempre, la sonorità piena e rotonda del leader: solista sensuale e immaginativo come pochi, al contempo attento allo spirito del proprio tempo nel mantenere la propria coerenza e lo stile inconfondibile. I due standard (”Oleo” e ”Body and Soul”) interpretati ne esemplificano al meglio il pensiero musicale leggero ed essenziale, che con souplesse fa apparire naturale ciò che facile in realtà non è. Una lezione di squisita musicalità da parte di un gigante del jazz in azione, che vola alto lungo i sentieri di una fervida cifra esecutiva. Bastano già le prime note del suo ”Sticky Wicket” per arguirne lo stato di grazia, poi confermato negli altri brani dal suo procedere ondeggiante e felpato.

L'inventiva di questo magnifico musicista ci restituisce intatto lo spirito di atmosfere irripetibili del jazz, quando ancora i musicisti non erano fagocitati dallo star-system per volare come schegge impazzite da un giorno all'altro, in giro per il mondo. Da rilevare le straordinarie trame percussive del grande Kenny Clarke, nell'accompagnare il leader in un percorso ammaliante che lega empaticamente i protagonisti ed il pubblico parigino. Lo testimonia peraltro il brano conclusivo, che vede impegnato il trio senza Gordon.
