Ci troviamo oggi a occuparci del terzo album del quartetto di Rich Halley, uno all'anno, per cui, dopo Crossing the Passes e The Wisdom of Rocks, usciti rispettivamente nel 2013 e nel 2014, ecco questo Eleven (tanti sono i brani che lo compongono), edito a fine 2015 (e quindi preceduto, in ciò, da Creating Structure) seppure inciso oltre un anno prima, a fine maggio del 2014.

Si tratta in qualche misura di uno di quei prodotti vagamente seriali che non deludono mai (c'è grande solidità e un'invidiabile interplay di gruppo, del resto in vita da diversi anni: questo è il suo sesto album), ma che al tempo stesso si finisce per ascoltare un po' distrattamente, perché pochi sono gli elementi di novità rispetto agli album precedenti capaci di catturare l'attenzione.

Subito l'attacco dell'iniziale "Retroactive" non sembra dischiudere spazi di particolare fantasia. Si respira una materia vitale, diretta, solida, come detto, ma forse fin troppo monolitica, in fondo prevedibile. Muscolare e vagamente funkeggiante, segue "Radioactive," mentre la qualità sale, a seguire, in "Remnant," terza e ultima parte di una suite che in tutta onestà, non sapendolo, non si avvertirebbe come tale, e ancora nel trittico di brani (esplicitamente separati, qui) che segue: il vivace "The Dugite Strikes," "The Creep of Time," denso e concentrato, e "Glimpses Through the Fog," dove si apprezza particolarmente l'interscambio esistente (ovunque, del resto) fra tenore e trombone.

Della cinquina di temi che chiudono il disco (tutti a firma di Halley, come del resto i precedenti), il più ispirato risulta "Dead of Winter," mentre il resto appare fin troppo lineare, sia pure sempre dall'alto, a scanso di equivoci, di un artigianato affidabilissimo e doti solistiche indiscusse.

Manca un po' la scintilla, insomma, che a volte la lunga consuetudine a suonare assieme può rischiare di affievolire. Starà in primo luogo al compositore, quale indiscutibilmente Rich Halley è, saperla rinfocolare, predisponendo architetture capace di scongiurare il più possibile le insidie della routine e dell'assuefazione.
