Il titolo di questo album Early Wayne è leggermente fuorviante. Le composizioni proposte costituiscono il cuore dell'estetica shorteriana, non soltanto gli esiti giovanili. La musica proposta denota un'approfondita ricerca sulle strutture e le armonie originarie, di cui vengono tracciati a tratti nuovi sentieri melodici inaspettati.

Non è sempre automatico che la rilettura di ammalianti standard faccia scaturire una proposta all'altezza delle aspettative. Ma in questo concerto in solitudine per solo pianoforte, è scattata la felice e misteriosa alchimia che fa di questo CD un piccolo gioiello adamantino. Senza gridare al miracolo, tutto funziona nelle trame intessute da Denny Zeitlin, grazie ad un percorso musicale ben articolato sul piano dinamico, coinvolgente e ricco di pathos. Talora si assiste ad un lieve processo di destrutturazione, che trasfigura l'aura cupa e malinconica delle composizioni shorteriane in momenti di lieve e gioioso lirismo.
