Se qualcuno vi chiede cosa è il jazz, fategli ascoltare questo magnifico set del 1972. Sensuale, vellutato ed intriso di blues, è una magistrale lezione di classe, talento, verve, souplesse esecutiva. Sottraendosi alle prevedibili gabbie della jam session, i due leader offrono controllati spunti solistici volti a condensare in goduriose chases l'essenza del jazz. Grazie all'implacabile sostegno ritmico, i solisti volano alto soprattutto negli standard ellingtoniani per costruire un percorso d'aura classicità senza tempo.

A differenza di quanto avviene nelle formazioni estemporanee, qui si intravede un bel respiro collettivo nel muoversi con libertà all'interno delle varie trame formali. Regna suprema una gioiosa empatia che porta talora Oscar Peterson a fermarsi per ascoltare estasiato il suono possente di Ben Webster, prodigo di sontuosi riff e camaleontiche sfumature di suono.

Tutto riesce facile anche perché i due compagni di viaggio della ritmica aggiungono al tessuto musicale plasticità di fraseggio ed inventiva melodica. Grazie al duplice formato (CD + DVD), l'ascoltatore potrà gustarsi sinesteticamente la verace comunicativa di geniali musicisti che portano una formula (il quartetto) a livelli di straordinaria eccellenza.
