Mockuno NuClear: Drop It

Drop It riunisce tre diverse sedute di registrazione, di cui due dal vivo, nelle quali il leader Liudas Mockunas esegue per la prima volta con un trio tutto lituano composizioni già affrontate nel corso degli ultimi anni con diversi tipi di formazione. Mockunas si esibisce al tenore, al baritono, al soprano con grande personalità sfruttando al meglio le caratteristiche degli strumenti e piegandoli alle esigenze delle sue improvvisazioni, passando da momenti di furiosa veemenza ad altri di insospettata dolcezza.

Ma sono le tastiere di Dmitrij Golovanov a determinare il carattere della registrazione. Quando sotto le sue dita scorrono i tasti del pianoforte siamo dalle parti della libera improvvisazione di stampo contemporaneo con virate verso un linguaggio più jazzistico. Alle prese con il piano elettrico, Golovanov oscilla tra umori davisiani anni settanta ed un free funk che sarebbe piaciuto a Sun Ra, il tutto ammantato da uno straniante alone vintage.

Oltre al lungo (oltre undici minuti), lisergico "The Dark Side/The Bright Side," spiccano per una sorta di anomalia stilistica "Elephant Tango" e "Drop It". Il primo è un tango che il sax soprano del leader conduce dalle parti di un Sidney Bechet afterhours in cerca di emozioni proibite, il secondo ha un inizio quasi drum 'n' bass prima di trasformarsi in una cavalcata burlesque degna del Willem Breuker Kollektief più effervescente.
