Un groviglio di fili. Dallo strumento a pedali, amplificatori e computer. Un groviglio di frequenze campionate, un impasto di suoni che si attorciglia alle orecchie gravido di suggestioni. È questo il jazz elettronico di Michel Benita.

Con alle spalle un’esperienza di primo piano (collaborazioni con Rita Marcotulli, Peter Erskine e tanti altri musicisti) il bassista francese di origini algerine spinge il jazz verso la dimensione elettronica.

Ne esce fuori un CD che spazia tra il passato futuro di Bitches Brew (“This Is the Moment”) e quello prossimo dei Massive Attack (“Dub Team”). Non molto distante, nelle tessiture e nelle commistioni, dal Sylvian più ispirato.

Nel mezzo, rifrazioni di generi che non t’aspetti: gli spezzettamenti ritmici jungle (“Kpt’n”), il rap stilizzato di “Sky Scream”, le liquide atmosfere chill out di “Something’s Wrong”.

Qua e là voci campionate di Archie Shepp ("This is the Moment"), di Erik Truffaz con cui frequenta da tempo altri versanti elettronici (“Translating”). Spunta pure una collaborazione con la "gusty" singer Stephanie McKay, nuova giovane promessa, mentre in “Whispering” la tromba campionata di Paolo Fresu è il piatto forte. Nils-Petter Molvaer (tromba) e Dhafer Youssef (oud e voce) gli danno un aiuto negli arrangiamenti.

Un CD indulgente di un bassista jazz che mette il suo bagaglio di conoscenze in un campionatore. Niente male.
