Warren Smith: Dragon Dave Meets Prince Black Knight from the Darkside of the Moon

Trenta minuti e venti secondi. Un long playing di breve durata. Solo che è un CD. Anche se è la riedizione di una audiocassetta recuperata da polverosi archivi. E un titolo difficile da ricordare: Dragon Dave Meets Prince Black Knight from the Darkside of the Moon. Il batterista/compositore Warren Smith (Aretha Franklin, Sam Rivers, Max Roach M'Boom Ensemble) s'inventa (siamo nel 1988) una sorta di pamphlet umoristico/fumettistico contro la guerra (in particolar modo quella fredda con l'ex Unione Sovietica) e contro la proliferazione delle armi nucleari.

Ne risulta un disco bizzarro, curioso, militante, ironico, con momenti di ottima musica, altri di impatto quasi teatrale per l'enfasi con la quale vengono caratterizzati i personaggi, e altri ancora imprigionati in una torre di babele linguistica per il sovrapporsi dei narratori, a loro volta sommersi dalla trama percussiva scatenata dal leader e da Kenyatte Abdur-Rahman.

L'iniziale "Prelude" ti teletrasporta da qualche parte tra Alabama e Virginia, in una vecchia chiesa battista tra predicatori infervorati e fedeli eccitati, doppio fender rhodes, tromboni grondanti soulness, e presagi di una minaccia incombente. Il successivo "Dragon Dave" ha swing, charme, rilassa l'atmosfera, increspata talvolta da fischi e suoni onomatopeici, ma il groove rimane sereno, anche se specchio di una felicità un po' fasulla. E sono già alle spalle più di dieci minuti. Il resto è un incrociarsi di spoken-word completamente improvvisato, raffiche free, malinconie blues, New Orleans parade ed esplosioni telluriche.
