Il giovane batterista Dylan Jack, nativo del Massachusetts, ci presenta in questo album il suo quartetto e non si può dire che l'incontro non sia interessante: le geometrie del gruppo sono nette, chiare, il suo eloquio, e lo stesso equilibrio fra i vari strumenti, altrettanto, peraltro in un contesto che sa prendersi i suoi rischi, senza salti nel buio ma neppure limitandosi al semplice compitino in bella calligrafia.

Si parte brillanti (tutti i brani si devono al leader e l'incisione risale al febbraio 2017), con Todd Brunel al clarinetto basso (anche la capacità di diversificare colori e atmosfere dei vari episodi, pur sempre con un'avvertibile coerenza di fondo, in base allo strumento suonato da Brunel testimonia dell'intelligenza di Jack e compagni). Il sax soprano detta le coordinate del successivo "Sentenced," con qualche soluzione più ardita rispetto all'iniziale "Are You Made of Coins?" (ma anche un solo di batteria forse un po' sovrabbondante), con la coppia di brani che segue a confermare la solidità del lavoro, il cui momento più significativo arriva con tutta probabilità col conclusivo "Compare and Contrast," libero ed elegante, con Brunel al clarinetto, a suggello di un'opera che si fa ascoltare volentieri e con profitto, senza cadute di tensione e costante buon gusto, anche se magari senza neanche particolari colpi d'ala.
