Ekkehard Wölk: Desire for Spring

L'idea non è certo nuova: l'obiettivo è quello di partire da composizioni di autori della musica classica e di riarrangiarle per una formazione contemporanea, attualizzandole con una pronuncia fluida e cadenzata, più o meno compromessa con il jazz, come nell'ultimo decennio sta perseguendo sistematicamente The Classical Jazz Quartet (Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Stefon Harris e Lewis Nash).

In questo caso si rinforza un canonico trio jazz con due archi (il violino e il violoncello) che rimandano automaticamente alla tradizione della musica da camera. Il responsabile del progetto, il pianista, leader ed arrangiatore Ekkehard Wölk, ha scelto un repertorio stilisticamente e cronologicamente ampio, che va da Bach al Novecento di Bartok e Stravinskij, passando per Mozart e Brahms.

Il risultato è piacevole, lontano tanto dalle storiche esperienze della Third Stream Music, quanto dagli sporadici tentativi afroamericani, ora grevi e parodistici, ora riuscitissimi (come per esempio la rivisitazione del monteverdiano "Lamento di Arianna" da parte dell'Art Ensemble of Chicago nei primi anni Settanta). Arrangiamenti rigorosi combinano nella giusta misura austerità e leggerezza, consistente strutturazione e fluidità narrativa, facendo prevalere un tono disteso ed elegante. Il violino e il piano sono gli strumenti in maggiore evidenza.

Per quanto l'operazione sia lodevole e condotta con alta professionalità, non direi tuttavia che la ricerca jazzistica più convincente dell'attualità passi attraverso questo genere di ibridazioni.
