The Recyclers: Davout

La collaborazione tra il percussionista inglese residente a Parigi Steve Arguelles ed il pianista francese Benoit Delbecq è di lunga data (si incontrarono ad un workshop di Steve Coleman ben venticinque anni fa) così come di lunga data è il loro coinvolgimento con l'elettronica (versante Ambitronix e prima versione dei Recyclers). In questo Davout (dal nome dei prestigiosi studi di registrazione parigini da poco dismessi) si ritrovano con un altro storico collaboratore come il sound designer Nicolas Becker e danno alle stampe un disco di notevole interesse.

Un improvvisatore sofisticato come Delbecq, un percussionista fantasioso come Arguelles ed un guastatore sonoro come Becker trovano un mirabile punto d'incontro, paradossalmente, sconfinando dai propri territori abituali. Prendiamo «Caboose» e «Minaret» due brani dalle coordinate collocabili a cavallo tra Africa e Medioriente. Nel primo lo ngoni di Christophe Mink disegna arabeschi delicati sul tappeto percussivo, con fulmini elettronici a creare riverberi anni ottanta, dissonanze pianistiche ed il moog a completare una torre di babele sonora di grande appeal.

Nel secondo un bordone ritmico alla drum & bass crea una sorta di trance music nella quale, questa volta, lo ngoni si libera in un intervento solistico di stampo rock. «Kitchen» è un brevissimo gioioso e danzante intermezzo che alleggerisce la tensione. Mentre il conclusivo «­+ X» è un oasi sostanzialmente acustica nel quale il concetto di piano-trio si ricompone in una versione minimalista che il sax di Antonin-Tri Hoang arricchisce di ulteriori suggestioni.

Disco tra i più freschi, inventivi, contagiosi e piacevoli ascoltati ultimamente.
