Avishai Cohen: Dark Nights

Disco dalle atmosfere notturne, e non poteva essere diversamente visto il titolo, Dark Nights è stato registrato in una sola giornata, con la musica scritta da Avishai Cohen suonata per la prima volta senza prove o accordi preventivi. Rilassatezza e spontaneità sono dunque le parole d'ordine della registrazione che conferma le doti di intenso trombettista e autorevole leader di Cohen, qui alle prese con il trio di lunga data denominato Triveni, e alcuni ospiti tra cui la sorella clarinettista Anat Cohen.

Al materiale originale si aggiungono alcuni standard d'eccellenza (Charles Mingus, Billy Strayhorn, Frank Foster) e la miscela di bop aggiornato, blues, ballads, tipica del trombettista israeliano prende forma. La novità rispetto alle precedenti incisioni risiede nell'uso da parte del leader dell'elettronica non come mero accessorio coloristico ma come vero e proprio quarto strumento del gruppo.

Ed è da questa dimensione che arrivano alcune tra le cose migliori dell'album, come "Dark Nights, Darker Days" e "Betray," blues lenti e sensuali nei quali l'overdub della tromba con effetti da chitarra elettrica fa la differenza. Senza dimenticare la struttura mobile ed eterea di "You In All Directions" e i tre minuti scarsi di "The OC," scoppiettante omaggio al genio di Ornette Coleman. Chiusura all'insegna della fragile tenerezza di "I Fall in Love Too Easily" non troppo velato omaggio a Chet Baker con la voce di Keren Ann e il piano di Gerald Clayton in evidenza.
