Joe Morris - Luther Gray: Creatures
Da anni compagni di avventura in numerose formazioni (documentate su dischi come Beautiful Existence, High Definition, Today on Earth, Colorlife o Wildlife) il batterista Luther Gray ed il chitarrista (negli ultimi tempi anche contrabbassista) Joe Morris, sono qui alla prima registrazione effettuata in duo. Formazione che sembra intrigare particolarmente Morris, vedi il recente Elm City Duets con il contrabbasso straordinario di Barre Phillips.

In Creatures Joe Morris fornisce un'ampia dimostrazione di perché debba essere considerato uno dei chitarristi più intriganti, originali e creativi della sua generazione. Uno stile che se affonda le radici nel solco dei grandi interpreti dello strumento legati al free, al post free e all'avanguardia (Derek Bailey su tutti) palesa dei connotati del tutto personali.

Un tono chiaro, limpido caratterizza il suono della sua chitarra che passa disinvoltamente da sonorità cariche di elettricità ad altre assai vicine a timbriche semiacustiche. Le linee improvvisative sono costruite quasi sempre su singole note ed il fraseggio è spesso debitore delle novità introdotte dall'avvento del bebop. Se aggiungiamo l'influenza esercitata dalla frequentazione con Joe Maneri e relativa teoria della micro tonalità, con ampio risalto dato a pause e silenzi, possiamo avere un quadro abbastanza completo dell'universo chitarristico di Morris.

Che in questo Creatures sfrutta al meglio le abilità percussive di Luther Gray, bravo ad interagire con grande senso della misura con il suo compagno di viaggio, fornendo i giusti appoggi, accompagnandolo nelle improvvise e impreviste divagazioni, sollecitandolo con grande fantasia e sensibilità.
