Al pubblico del jazz in Italia il sassofonista e flautista Juhani Aaltonen è quasi sconosciuto. Eppure è uno dei grandi nomi del jazz scandinavo, ha raggiunto la considerevole età di 75 anni ed evidenzia in questo lavoro tutte le sue doti.

Come altri tenoristi della sua generazione il sassofonista finlandese è stato profondamente segnato dall'ascolto di John Coltrane (incontrato a Helsinki nei primi anni sessanta) da cui ha assimilato in particolare il magistero timbrico e la dimensione cantabile. Due aspetti che Aaltonen ha perfezionato fino a raggiungere una cifra stilistica suggestiva che lo avvicina in alcuni momenti a Charles Lloyd.

I suoi dischi hanno circolato pochissimo in Italia ma tra i recenti ricordiamo String Revisited del 2003 (con Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille più un'orchestra da camera) e Reflections dell'anno seguente ancora coi due grandi partner.

In questo album Aaltonen guida un quartetto tutto scandinavo con la pianista Iro Haarla (a lungo partner di Edward Vesala), il contrabbassista Ulf Krokfors e il batterista Reino Laine. È un gruppo dalla particolare impronta lirica e animato da una viva tensione esplorativa; a differenza di molto jazz nordico il quartetto non perde mai tensione jazzistica e, anche nei momenti più astratti, evita atmosfere algide e rarefatte.

L'omaggio alla dimensione più melodica di Coltrane è evidente nelle ballad "Shimmer of Fallen Stars" e "Never Ending Sea"; in altri momenti (l'avvincente "Rautapallo," il raffinato "Reflections") Aaltonen evidenzia le sue ottime doti di flautista.

Nel complesso un jazz vario ed inventivo, che merita attenzione.
