Ron Miles: Circuit Rider

È pratica ormai diffusa anche tra musicisti dall'assidua frequentazione del jazz avventuroso e sperimentale quella di confrontarsi con registrazioni di tipo "domestico," intime, di tono colloquiale, in economie di mezzi, dove a prevalere è una sorta di understatement interpretativo. Circuit Rider rientra a pieno titolo in questa categoria, presenta tre musicisti di grande spessore, tre maestri dalla ipnotica personalità e dal multiforme percorso artistico che ci offrono un'ora di musica carezzevole, e gioiosa, nella quale tradizione folk, influssi gospel, ed eleganza improvvisativa si fondono splendidamente.

Interessanti le cinque composizioni originali di Ron Miles tra le quali spicca l'iniziale "Comma," la cornetta di Miles pura come acqua di sorgente, dolcemente malinconica e la chitarra di Bill Frisell che le danza intorno con accordi che frullano in testa e diventano ritornello difficile da scacciare. Ma sono le versioni dei brani di Charles Mingus e Jimmy Giuffre ad illuminare Circuit Rider.

In "Jive Five Floor Four" il trio rende con essenzialità danzante la complessa scrittura di Mingus fondendo ironiche traiettorie con eleganza armonica. La purezza timbrica degli strumenti esalta la struggente melodia di "Reincarnation of a Lovebird," rispettata e riproposta senza particolari variazioni ma con un attenzione ai particolari che porta in superficie tutta la sua bellezza. L'album si chiude con una splendida "Two Kinds of Blues" di Giuffre, brano che ci regala un ispirato interplay che si insinua tra le rigide strutture del blues e le apre ad atmosfere intense e sognanti.
