Circles è il secondo album da leader per il pianista venezuelano Benito Gonzalez, dopo il debutto del 2004 dal titolo Starting Points e dopo una nutrita fetta di carriera caratterizzata da lavori in qualità di sideman.

Per l'occasione Gonzalez si avvale della collaborazione di una ritmica spettacolare, composta da Christian McBride al basso e Jeff "Tain" Watts alla batteria, mentre in prima linea si alternano tre saxofonisti dalla grande forza timbrica: Azar Lawrence, Myron Walden e Ron Blake. L'ensemble dà vita a una scaletta varia e incalzante, aperta dalla title-track, un brano di oltre dieci minuti, che attraversa diversi stati d'animo sonori, caratterizzati dal pianismo eclettico di Gonzalez e dagli interventi ficcanti di Walden e Blake. Il leader marchia a fuoco ogni passaggio, dando sempre l'impressione di girare a largo dalle consuetudini e dagli atteggiamenti di sterile posa. La sua è una scrittura densa, piena di note dai colori sgargianti, che ha poco feeling con i silenzi e le pause prolungate, anche se non manca sotto il profilo della profondità espressiva.

Tra i tanti fast-tempo proposti segnaliamo la tranquillità della fascinosa "Elise," un brano scuro, eseguito in solo dal leader, il quale riesce a mostrare anche il suo lato stilistico più romantico e struggente.
