Benoît Delbecq: Circles and Calligrams

Il pianoforte come laboratorio timbrico. L'idea in sé non è nuova, ma in campo jazzistico non è stata molto investigata e consente di tenere a distanza l'opzione soltanto muscolare verso lo strumento. Benoît Delbecq è artista intelligente, da anni alle prese con lo studio delle possibilità di estendere la funzione dialogica del piano preparato. Una funzione più strutturata rispetto alla dimensione aleatoria proposta da Cage a suo tempo, ma sicuramente collegata a quella.

Le strutture indipendenti che si ascoltano in diverse tracce, prodotte dalle corde modificate con oggetti e metalli, fanno pensare a sovraincisioni. Ma Delbecq afferma di no in diverse interviste, dunque il ruolo del tecnico del Bösendorfer, Philippe Bailleul, è decisivo per ottenere l'equilibrio generale.

All'interno di atmosfere che rimandano al Gamelan (era già successo in un'altra opera pubblicata dalla Songlines, Nu Turn e ancora prima nei lavori con i Recyclers, di cui Delbecq era co-leader con Noël Akchoté e Steve Arguelles), Delbecq fraseggia con moduli semplici, racchiusi spesso in uno spazio stretto della tastiera; evita temi espliciti o evoluzioni armoniche, predilige invece la ripetizione, le leggera ossessione, con effetti stranianti. Il tocco è rarefatto, ma non manca di una certa forza. Se la divagazione come cifra stilistica fa pensare a Paul Bley, la filosofia generale di questo pianismo mobile, inafferrabile e nervoso è legato alla lezione di Lennie Tristano, magari interpolato a certe idee di Ligeti.

La sintesi di Delbecq è comunque altamente originale e riesce a stemperare con delicatezza impressionista i labirinti un po' stordenti dei brani circolari e ripetitivi. Il piano preparato fa faville in "Biobeat" e "Fireflies," ma anche un'aforisma come "Alpha" e la ripresa folgorante di "Flakes" di Steve Lacy lasciano il segno.

Benoît Delbecq continua un lavoro prezioso che trascende sia jazz che musica accademica, trovando un'interessante terra di nessuno sonora.
