Marius Neset: Circle of Chimes

Prosegue con ottimi risultati la collaborazione tra il pluripremiato sassofonista norvegese Marius Neset e la prestigiosa etichetta tedesca Act. E va sempre più definendosi quella che sembra essere la qualità preminente del trentaduenne musicista di Bergen ossia la scrittura per formazioni di medie/grandi dimensioni. Se nel precedente Snowmelt era addirittura la London Sinfonietta a dar voce alle sue composizioni in Circle of Chime il quintetto che aveva dato alle stampe l'ottimo Pinball viene allargato a ottetto con l'innesto, tra gli altri, del chitarrista Lionel Loueke.

Formazione ideale per le visioni musicali del leader, in grado di esprimere la potenza e l'energia di una big band come di esaltare l'interplay, le sfumature, le dinamiche tipiche di un piccolo combo. Circle of Chime risulta album ricco e composito, caratterizzato da una impronta melodica che attraversa l'intera registrazione nella quale le suggestioni musicali di Neset sono ulteriormente sottolineate dalla particolare strumentazione dell'ensemble.

Il violoncello di Andreas Brantelid e i flauti di Ingrid Neset incarnano la componente classico/cameristica chiaramente in primo piano nel brano Prague's Ballet. La chitarra spesso distorta di Lionel Loueke aggiunge elementi funkeggianti al groove delle esecuzioni mentre gli interventi vocali rimandano a Madre Africa. Il piano di Ivo Neame, sottovalutato pianista britannico, e i sassofoni del leader, insieme alla sezione ritmica costituiscono l'ossatura jazz dell' ensemble mentre vibrafono e marimba di Jim Hart ingentiliscono il tutto.
