All'Italia, Sarah Jane Morris, non rinuncerebbe mai. Neanche se il Bel Paese a volte può trasformarsi nell'ultima delle periferie del mondo, dove furbi di quartiere e ladri di mestiere farebbero di tutto per sporcare l'innocenza, l'umiltà e l'impegno.

E in questo nuovo lavoro c'è ancora una volta un po' d'Italia. Un paio di tributi ad artisti molto diversi, ma legati da un sentimento di italianità da esportazione: Ennio Morricone, nella rilettura con testo di "Love Is Pain" dalla colonna sonora di C'era una volta in America; Pino Daniele con la sua poesia partenopea in musica di "Alleria".

Ci sono musicisti di rilievo che l'accompagnano. Da un lato, tra gli altri, Fabrizio Bosso, dall'altro Danilo Rea. Chi arrangia questo affresco per archi è l'italianissimo Enrico Melozzi che dirige e arrangia la Cinik Cello Orchestra.

Possiamo anche aggiungere che tutto il CD è stato realizzato a Roma e il quadro è ancora più completo. Già la rilettura di "Fast Car" è da brivido. Sarah Jane Morris riempie con la sua tessitura vocale, tra l'avorio e la sabbia, le profondità marine e gli anfratti rocciosi, i pochi vuoti lasciati all'immaginazione dalla originaria versione di Tracy Chapman.

Dà luminosità a "The Blower's Daughter" di Damien Rice e sfida, si fa per dire, il "fratello" in voce e pensieri, Tom Waits ("Blue Valentine"). Un inedito dal sapore traditional scritto da Boy George, "She Always," e la rilettura in chiave orchestrale dei "Migratory Birds" non sono solo da complemento.

Il vecchio cuore pulsante del romanticismo all'italiana c'è tutto. Le "levigature" orchestrali appiattiscono forse troppo il CD nella sua interezza e gli donano un'aura un po' troppo classicistica. Inevitabilmente, visti i propositi del lavoro, non c'è la sporcizia del blues né l'improvvisazione del jazz. Ma tant'è: la passione e la bravura dell'artista inglese non sono mai in discussione.
