Dottie Grossman, moglie di Richard, grande pianista prematuramente scomparso nel 1992, è poetessa la cui prosa Allen Ginsberg ha definito: "chiara, particolare, personale, divertente, selvaggia, curiosa e lucida". Michael Vlatkovich è trombonista, compositore, arrangiatore leader di alcuni quotati ensemble e collaboratore ad ampio spettro artistico, da Rova Saxophone Quartet a Bryan Adams, da Gerry Hemingway a Peggy Lee.

L'idea del duo Call & Response nasce dall'amore reciproco verso musica e poesia e dall'intento di uscire dai vecchi e usurati modelli di jazz & poetry. Così quando Dottie chiama, enunciando le proprie liriche, Michael risponde attraverso improvvisazioni sollecitate da una parola, da un verso, da un fonema, da un'intonazione. In questo Call & Response & Friends si aggiungono alcuni amici, che arricchiscono la strumentazione e di conseguenza l'impatto sonoro, ma l'idea di base ed il risultato finale non perdono efficacia.

Trentaquattro brani nei quali si alternano brevissimi poemi scritti e recitati da Dottie ed interventi musicali di Lawrence e dei suoi amici. L'effetto è coinvolgente ed è assai interessante sia dal punto di vista letterario che musicale. Perché la recitazione suscita nell'ascoltatore immagini ed emozioni personali legate alla parola, che a loro volta vengono contaminate dall'interpretazione dei musicisti, subendo un duplice influsso. Call & Response & Friends è un viaggio che si può intraprendere su due binari paralleli o aprire a molteplici esperienze sensoriali. Ma è un viaggio che vale la pena di affrontare.
