Non fatevi ingannare dalla scaletta dei brani contenuti in Breakin Through, tutti da annoverare tra i classici del jazz, della musica brasiliana, del musical, del soul. Perché bastano poche battute di "Singing in the Rain" per capire di che pasta è fatto il nostro. Voce screziata, leggermente abrasiva ma calda, che arriva direttamente al cuore -Ray Charles da giovane con un registro più alto? -arrangiamento elastico e mutevole -Blood, Sweat and Tears d'annata? -portano il brano lontano da comodi manierismi.

E poi "I Got Rhythm" dove scat e continui stop and go la fanno da padrone, "Waltz for Debbie" per piano e voce versione dolente e leggera come una nuvola del capolavoro di Bill Evans. Mentre "Days of Wine And Roses" è effervescente, sincopata e guizzante con il flauto a sfidare la voce in un gioco di sorprese e di agguati. E se "I Don't Need No Doctor" è il lato irresistibilmente funkeggiante di Paul Jost il suo "Book Faded Brown" -brano interpretato tra gli altri da The Band e dal chitarrista Carl Perkins -è una dolce ballad dal sapore rock che fa sognare a occhi aperti.

L'approccio di Jost al materiale altrui è agevolato sia dalle qualità di ottimo strumentista -batteria, armonica e chitarra gli strumenti principali -che di fantasioso arrangiatore e prolifico compositore. Riesce così a penetrare con disinvoltura nelle strutture dei brani combinandone i disparati elementi con padronanza e creatività. È una lettura che va oltre la superficie, le convenzioni e le barriere stilistiche in un apprezzabile tentativo di rinnovare, senza scardinarla, la tradizione del jazz vocale.
