Logan Strosahl Team: Book I Of Arthur
Avevamo incontrato il Logan Strosahl Team, la formazione del giovane musicista newyorchese, circa tre anni fa, recensendo il precedente Up Go We, nel quale già emergeva l'interesse del sassofonista e compositore per la musica barocca del XV e XVI secolo. Qui tale predilezione viene messa a frutto in un album singolarissimo, primo capitolo di un'annunciata trilogia dedicata alla vita di Re Artù.

Si tratta di un lavoro che fonde jazz e classica, avvicinandosi peraltro a certe opere del periodo progressive, e che include anche delle parti in cui alla musica si aggiunge un recitativo, indispensabile per indirizzare la narrazione musicale nella direzione del racconto storico.

Ma aldilà degli elementi ispiratori e degli aspetti strutturali extramusicali, il valore strettamente musicale di Book I of Arthur è alto: belle le composizioni, suggestive e dalla chiara caratterizzazione drammaturgica; notevole l'equilibrio tra antico e moderno, tra contrappunto e improvvisazione; eccellente l'impasto dei suoni, che gioca sull'ampia presenza di fiati, ma li esalta con un uso intelligentemente intenso delle percussioni (lo si percepisce fin dal "Prologue"), con la collaborazione del piano e con alcuni pregevolissimi assoli del contrabbasso; tutt'altro che piatto il contesto generale, vuoi per gli squarci aperti dagli interventi delle voci narranti, vuoi soprattutto per gli spazi concessi dalla scrittura all'espressività individuale (si ascoltino per esempio il magmatico interagire dei fiati in "Wherein the Beast Is Ever More and More").

Complessivamente, quindi, un lavoro originale per scrittura, riferimenti e impianto, godibilissimo e a suo modo innovativo. Consigliabile, così come lo è seguire il suo giovane, interessante autore.
