Spontaneous Music Ensemble: Biosystem

Inciso nel 1977 dallo Spontaneous Music Ensemble (e ripubblicato oggi con 35 minuti d'inediti) questo disco appartiene alla seconda fase della vita del gruppo, quando la presenza di fiati ed ance (Trevor Watts, Kenny Wheeler, Evan Parker) fu sostituita da strumenti a corda: il violino di Nigel Coombes, la chitarra acustica di Roger Smith ed il violoncello di Colin Wood che uscirà subito dell'ensemble.

Alle percussioni restava ovviamente il leader storico, John Stevens che negli anni successivi continuerà a riunire la formazione base aggiungendo differenti ospiti.

Fondato nel 1965 da quest'ultimo, assieme al sassofonista Trevor Watts, lo Spontaneous Music Ensemble è stato uno dei più significativi gruppi europei dediti alla libera improvvisazione, in una logica molto distante dai modelli americani e influenzata, semmai, da Anton Webern e dalla musica contemporanea.

A trent'anni dall'incisione originale la musica non ha perso nulla della prepotente quanto rigorosa carica visionaria: i solisti creano un interplay tanto libero e strutturalmente aperto quanto capace di creare dinamiche di forte pregnanza narrativa. Ovviamente è musica di non facile consumo: è coraggiosa, intransigente e ci ricorda l'esistenza di spazi non ancora omologati alla logica del consumo di massa.

In questa riedizione sono stati aggiunti tre brani: "Another Beginning" è un pezzo a sé stante mentre "Restored" e "The Bell And Beyond" s'integrano con il già edito "Saved The Bell" essendo parte della stessa performance improvvisata.
