Beh, che si può dire di un disco come Bebop Bassoon, un titolo un programma, due parole che racchiudono intenti e soprattutto limiti di una tale operazione? Daniel Smith è un virtuoso del fagotto, strumento che traghetta con estrema disinvoltura dall’ambito classico a quello jazzistico, conferendogli una dignità solistica da sempre negata soprattutto nella musica improvvisata.

Ma se le doti esecutive di Smith sono indubbie, è il livello progettuale a suscitare più di un dubbio: ha senso interpretare una manciata di brani riconducibili al periodo bebop, ricorrendo ad una indubbia tecnica sopraffina, per piegare le rigidità tecniche dello strumento alle linee zigzaganti, ai tempi velocissimi, agli incroci pericolosi creati da musicisti come Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Sonny Rollins ?

Se inizialmente un qualche interesse potrebbe essere solleticato dall’inusualità della proposta, dall’originalità della voce strumentale, col passare degli ascolti il progetto mostra la corda. E non è solo l’inevitabile difficoltà d’intonazione, la fluidità del fraseggio che non può competere con i più tradizionali strumenti a fiato, è soprattutto un senso crescente di inutilità, di esperimento fine a se stesso, senza sbocchi e senza prospettive a prendere il sopravvento. Insieme a un po’ di noia...
