Back Home, quarto disco da leader di Melissa Aldana, sassofonista cilena vincitrice del prestigioso Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competion 2013, ha tutte le caratteristiche per diventare un piccolo classico del genere. Per la maturità dimostrata dalla ventisettenne sassofonista, la rigorosità del repertorio, la solidità del trio, la definizione del suono. Le nove composizioni del disco, otto delle quali originali, pur nella loro specificità, possono essere viste come una unica suite caratterizzata per lo più da tempi medi, con minime variazione dinamiche e metriche.

Ma la sensibilità del trio, la capacità di muoversi con pertinenza all'interno di forme consolidate, l'attenzione mai leziosa ai particolari, trasformano il pericolo di una possibile monotonia descrittiva in un affresco a tutto tondo, ricco di espressività e di suggestioni. Il suono maturo del tenore di Aldana, quel suo richiamo ai padri dello strumento—Sonny Rollins su tutti? -, la sensazione di pienezza che il trio palesa fanno il resto.

Calmo, rilassato, elastico, con un afflato spirituale figlio della concretezza e della semplicità piuttosto che dell'esaltazione mistica, Back Home è la convincente testimonianza del talento di una sassofonista in continua crescita.
