Free Nelson Mandoomjazz: Awakening of a Capital
Questo trio di musicisti scozzesi, basato in Edinburgo, è salito recentemente alla ribalta con due EP pubblicati da una etichetta indipendente, con titoli che rimandavano esplicitamente a Ornette Coleman (The Shape of Doomjazz to Come) e Sonny Rollins (Saxophone Giganticus), e una musica che ai riferimenti jazzistici aggiungeva quelli a Black Sabbath e Domenico Scarlatti, mescolando doom metal e free jazz in un amalgama definito appunto doomjazz dagli stessi musicisti per etichettare la loro musica. I due lavori hanno suscitato l'interesse del musicista e produttore Eraldo Bernocchi, spingendolo a ingaggiarli per la RareNoiseRecords che pubblica ora il loro primo lavoro completo, Awakening of a Capital (il titolo è una citazione dal futurista Luigi Russolo), oltre a ristampare i due precedenti EP riuniti in un unico CD con i brani registrati ex novo.

La musica del trio si basa pesantemente sul basso martellante, spesso distorto, di Colin Stewart, che insieme al batterista Paul Archibald fornisce la componente doom, ossessiva e ripetitiva, su cui si inserisce il sax alto di Rebecca Sneddon a contribuire per la parte jazz, spesso caratterizzata da acuti free. Gli otto brani che compongono l'album si susseguono come in una suite, dall'iniziale "Sunn Ra" che in meno di un minuto prova a distillare l'essenza del free jazz, fino a "Beneath the Sea," che conclude il disco su una nota di basso sostenuta. In mezzo, una serie di brani abbastanza omogenei fra loro con atmosfere prevalentemente dark dalle quali emerge il suono del sassofono, alternando tonalità morbide e stridenti sopra la base ritmica costante.

Il disco, complessivamente interessante anche se non entusiasmante, lascia intravedere le potenzialità del trio, da cui è lecito attendersi di più in futuro, a patto che i musicisti riescano a svincolarsi da una formula che sembra già avere esaurito il suo carattere innovativo.
