Talento emergente del piano jazz statunitense, Bobby Avey ha vinto nel 2011 il prestigioso "Thelonius Monk International Jazz Competition" che lo ha proiettato alla ribalta nazionale. Dopo due album e l'esperienza come sideman nel gruppo "Expansions" di Dave Liebman, il musicista newyorchese sperimenta la formula del quintetto per questa affascinante suite in tre movimenti dedicata alla rivoluzione haitiana del 1791 contro la Francia.

Il progetto nasce nel 2012 in seguito ad un viaggio ad Haiti e l'approfondimento della musica legata ai riti Vudù. In questo suo CD emerge una buona qualità di scrittura, che mira ad incastonare i ritmi caraibici nell'alveo del post-bop contemporaneo. La sua vena compositiva ha peraltro il vantaggio di ospitare strumentisti di prima grandezza come Miguel Zenon e Ben Monder. Quest'ultimo si rende protagonista d interventi assai incisivi, grazie ai suoni abrasivi ed acidi della sua chitarra.

Pur godendo di un notevole interplay le composizioni originali del pianita sono plasmate dalla libera creatività dei solisti. In un tappeto sonoro serrato e vario metricamente, si impone su tutti il sax di Zenon, grazie ad una invidiabile duttilità espressiva e d una splendida voce strumentale.

Questo CD è pertanto un'opera particolarmente matura e capace di indicare una nuova direzione alla carriera di un pianista già dotato di una fantasiosa inventiva solistica.
