Tohpati: Tribal Dance

Read "Tribal Dance" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Nascent Indonesian guitarist, Tohpati strikes again with his third album and second trio date, greatly benefitting from the all- universe rhythm section of drummer Chad Wackerman and bassist Jimmy Haslip. Here, the artist coexists in that sacred space of high-octane power trios, assembled by progressive rock and jazz fusion guitar warlords, Joe Satriani, Greg Howe, Allan Holdsworth and other prominent ambassadors of this ilk. Tohpati's super clean licks and spicy Indo-Fusion treatments offset his crunchy chord voicings and ...

Tohpati: Tribal Dance

Read "Tribal Dance" reviewed by Chris M. Slawecki

Indonesian composer, producer and guitarist Tohpati continues his march toward dominating the jazz-rock fusion guitar world with Tribal Dance. Written and produced by the guitarist, this electrifying Dance was recorded live in a Los Angeles studio then finished in Indonesia, and is credited to “Tohpati featuring Jimmy Haslip and Chad Wackerman." Haslip and Wackerman previously worked together on the 2010 MoonJune set Blues for Tony, to honor the untimely passing in 2007 of drummer, composer and Lifetime bandleader Tony Williams, ...

Tohpati: Tribal Dance

Read "Tribal Dance" reviewed by Ian Patterson

A revered musician in Indonesia through his twenty-year association with progressive jazz outfit simakDialog and the guitar trio Trimus--alongside Indonesian guitar greats Dewa Budjana and Balawan--Tohpati has produced a handful of solo recordings since the late 1990s. Save The Planet (Moonjune Records, 2010) with his band Ethnomission showcased the broad dynamics of the guitarist's Indonesian jazz-fusion, while Riot (Moonjune Records, 2012) was a scintillating power trio outing with ...

Tohpati Ethnomission: Save the Planet

SimakDialog: Demi Masa

Read "Demi Masa" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff
